Welcome to GovFacility eNews!
Happy New Year and welcome to the January 2008 issue of GovFacility eNews. This is a monthly e-newsletter providing news, events, and other information for public sector facility managers responsible for the management, maintenance, and security of buildings occupied by government employees and used by citizens. We realize facilities management is a tremendous responsibility, more so than ever in the wake of 9/11, often with little or no increase in funding, while you are often called to do more with the same or less. We hope to offer information that helps you make decisions, and we hope that you will share information with us regarding news and stories, best practices, products and services, events - anything germane to your needs as facility management professionals. The www.GovFacility.com web site contains information we think you will find helpful. Let us know how we are doing and what other sorts of information you require.
If you have news or any other information you would like to share, please email either:

Fujitsu announces Green Policy Innovation project which aims to achieve a cumulative reduction of more than 7 million tons of CO2 from fiscal 2007 through fiscal 2010. TOKYO. December 10, 2007 Further strengthening its initiatives to promote Green IT, Fujitsu Limited today announced a new Green Policy Innovation project which aims to achieve a cumulative reduction of more than 7 million tons of CO2 from fiscal 2007 through fiscal 2010.
Fujitsu will concentrate its know-how and technological resources in two areas: reducing the environmental burden of IT infrastructure, and reducing customers' environmental burden through new IT applications. Going forward, the Company will successively introduce new products and services that will support these initiatives and enable customers to lessen their environmental burden, ultimately helping to curb global warming.
Environmental issuesand particularly the problem of global warmingare a growing concern for global society. In the IT field, the proportion of electric power consumed by IT continues to grow due to the widespread use of IT equipment and the increased demand for data centers. As a result, the development of energy-saving infrastructure has become an urgent priority. There are also high expectations that new applications of IT can help reduce society's overall environmental burden, and consequently interest in "green IT" is expected to intensify.

Siemens Building Technologies provides comprehensive compliance solution strategy with new bundled turnkey package. BUFFALO GROVE, IL. December 18, 2007 Full environmental controls and supporting documentation for achieving lab efficiency, safety and compliance now turnkey solution
Companies in all sectors of industry, government and academia incorporating laboratory operations into their enterprise now have access to a single source solution for achieving total environmental control, energy efficiency and compliance from Siemens Building Technologies, Inc. By bundling environmental monitoring, control and documentation services in a turnkey package, Siemens offers lab operators a simplified, cost-effective and accurate means to participate in the Laboratories for the 21st Century (Labs21®) movement, co-sponsored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).
Due to the often intense, specialized ambient conditions required to accomplish the processes and procedures typically performed in a life science or high-tech lab, far more energy and water per square foot are consumed than in most commercial buildings. According to Life Science Solutions Director Diane Feliciano-Welpe, “Siemens Building Technologies is offering an experienced team of professionals in the HVAC, power generation, lighting, water processing and related building environmental disciplines to formulate and execute a comprehensive plan of evaluation, renovation and documentation specifically for laboratories. This strategy is aimed at helping lab operators cost-effectively comply with more stringent operating and safety requirements, as well as maintain an overall improved energy conservation record.”

Stanford University researchers say their nanowire battery holds ten times more charge than existing lithium-ion batteries. December 21, 2007
Stanford researchers have found a way to use silicon nanowires to reinvent the rechargeable lithium-ion batteries that power laptops, iPods, video cameras, cell phones, and countless other devices.
The new technology, developed through research led by Yi Cui, assistant professor of materials science and engineering, produces 10 times the amount of electricity of existing lithium-ion, known as Li-ion, batteries. A laptop that now runs on battery for two hours could operate for 20 hours, a boon to ocean-hopping business travelers.
"It's not a small improvement," Cui said. "It's a revolutionary development."
The breakthrough is described in a paper, "High-performance lithium battery anodes using silicon nanowires," published online Dec. 16 in Nature Nanotechnology, written by Cui, his graduate chemistry student Candace Chan and five others.
